White belt

What to focus on this belt: key concepts, expectations, resources, and what's coming next.

Introduction

White belt is the starting rank. At this level, students focus on fundamentals. This page provides parents with an unofficial NK resource for guidance.

Focus This Belt
basic martial arts, focus, respect, listening
Typical Length
1-2 months (varies by effort and attendance)

Expectations

  • Arrive 5 minutes early in full uniform and belt. Instructors can help with tying.
  • Turn in an attendance card each class; progress is tracked through these cards.

Equipment & Safety

At white belt, only a National Karate uniform is required. In summer, students may wear NK t-shirts tucked into karate pants with their belt. At gold with green stripe, begin discussing sparring equipment with Ms. Babler. Sparring starts at solid green belt.

Tape Stripes

Tape stripes track attendance and skill. About every three classes, instructors review technique and listening. Students who meet expectations earn a stripe. Four stripes indicate readiness for belt testing.

Tournaments

White belts may participate in tournaments. Rings are grouped by age and belt level. Eligible divisions include:

  • Performance Basics — Students perform class basics one at a time. It's non-graded, participation-based, and ideal for new competitors. Often paired with Competitive Basics as practice.
  • Competitive Basics — Same skills, but judged and compared to peers. Grading focuses on:
    • Correct technique (e.g., punch twist)
    • Speed (every move performed quickly)
    • Power
    • Loud, controlled yells
    • Focused eyes and strong presence

What's Next

The next rank is solid gold belt. Students should aim to earn four stripes first, showing strong basics and good listening. Sparring begins around four months in, depending on progress. Contact Ms. Babler with questions about sparring or equipment.
